That is So Last Season

Since I am constantly talking about the importance of social media on my blog, people often challenge me. They say things like: “How can it be so important? Facebook isn’t going to be around forever, right?”

The doubt lies in the fact that people do not know the difference between social media and social networking. Social media, as defined by Anvil Media Inc. a SEM company, is an umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words and pictures. Social networking however is simply a form of social media.  Still confused well think of it this way.   Here at Blue Daring’s Eat Mo’ ‘Fo, we like to think of your organization as a person and as such lets liken social media to a wardrobe. Things such as your website, a blog, or message boards/forums are mostly staple pieces. Social networking initiatives are the trendy items you purchase to spice up your staples from time to time.

Just like a real wardrobe you can’t rely only on fads and what is trendy. We all know that social networking sites are subject to waves of popularity. (Remember how big MySpace was a few years ago?) Your ability to capitalize on these waves, however, can be a real opportunity for visibility. The key is using strategy to integrate your staples (i.e. social media outlets) with your trendy accessories (i.e. social networking). Further, like accessories, social networking is meant to draw attention to your main pieces, that said never reveal too much and always draw people back to your site.  So to answer the skeptics out there, no I don’t think Facebook will be around forever however, while sites may indeed come and go; a dynamic web marketing strategy never goes out of style.

Staying In Line Online

Our president Melissa has a knack for meeting clients in the most unexpected of places. On a couple of occasions a short conversation with a friendly cab driver turned into a contract or an overheard lunch conversation has become a business deal. So how does a simple conversation become a great opportunity? The answer is quite simple. She maintains our brand’s integrity in any situation.

As you take your company online, via web, social media or advertising, it is important that a you always remember to put your best foot forward. Your activities online should always be a direct reflection of your company. Take, for example, two common mistakes:

(1) Compromised Logos: How often do you go to a company’s Facebook account and see a cut off, pixilated or super-shrunk logo? Make sure your logo is intact and inline with your organization’s brand standards. It may seem like a small detail but a potential client might interpret that as sloppiness.

(2) Different Look & Feel – Most social networking sites give users tons of customization and personalization options. Choose colors and options that mirror your organization’s branding, not your mood that day. If there is nothing that matches or compliments your brand, use the default format.

Even though social media is a less formal venue, it is still critical that you convey a professional image and one that is in line with your company’s strategic goals. Although a cab ride or grabbing a quick bite at lunch are both casual environments, Melissa still represents the company in a professionally thus resulting in great business. Staying consistent and professional, no matter what the environment, always pays off!

The New News.

Last week my family welcomed a new addition. My cousin gave birth to a beautiful bouncing baby boy (hi Ronin!) The day he was born was a day filled of happiness, excitement, anticipation, and Facebook?

You read that right I said Facebook. It started with a mass text message in the morning letting everyone know my cousin was on her way to the hospital. Within a matter of hours my Facebook news feed turned into baby watch ’09 with friends and family all adding their warm wishes and updates on the status of the babies’ arrival. 10 minutes after the baby was delivered there was already a photo album dedicated to him. I admit as I type this it all seems a bit much but I have to say during the commotion it sure beat the traditional not knowing anything and waiting around the whole day for a late night phone call..

Studies show more people check their Facebook before their email when they first sit down on the computer. The fact is that the way we get news and information is changing and more and more; people are looking at social media for updates. Having your company post quick updates on new and exciting things going on is a great way to get people excited about your organization.

Most all types of social media have a way for users to update on the go. Having staff members tweet during a big event can help create buzz for the next one planned, or promoting the final product of a current project helps your client feel appreciated and gives potential clients the chance to check out what you have to offer.   Delivering your companies news & events to your target audience is one of the easiest and best uses for your companies’ social networking site.  Soon enough you will see the great results born from a  little effort towards your social media strategy.
