A New Reality

I have heard a lot of buzz about something called augmented reality (AR). It promises to change the way we see the world via our mobile phones. I just had to find out more.

What is AR anyway? Wikipedia defines it as: a term for a live direct or an indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input, such as sound or graphics. An example could be  sports game on TV that while we see the live game happening – we have scores, timers or a dancing robot layered on the screen. Turns out that I am familiar with AR.  Upon digging a little deeper, specifically in Europe, I discovered a world of promise, opportunity and excitement.

This led me to an augmented reality mobile browser called Layar app. In it I opened a Groupon app in Layar and peered into my mobile screen. It looked like the street I was standing on and then Groupon offers, in my area, began popping up all around me, overlaid on my screen. I was able to see my surroundings, on my phone, through the eyes of Groupon. Among other apps I found was the movie Battle Los Angeles app, where you can find scenes from the movie overlaid on various landmarks.  Also an ad for the Netherlands demonstrating how to find real estate, bars and even healthcare providers with the Layar app. This video sums it up perfectly:

Amazing. The ideas and opportunities for AR feel endless. Now when dining with friends instead of going to the same place we always do, I can open Yelp on my phone and it will suggest a variety of options with reviews within my area. Soon I see a world where we can sell real estate, advertise current sales, bar specials and offers our city’s best tourist attractions all through the use of an AR application.

But will it go even further than that? Could we potentially start bringing more than just locations to life? Will we one day be able to correlate this technology with printed materials, similar to the way we can post a QR code and immediately direct users to our website? Perhaps we’ll spend our commutes scanning ads with our phones and watching the commercials on the bus or train ride to work. Maybe we could reinvent direct mail to become an interactive experience. Will I be able to one day send out a resume that when viewed through an AR app reveals my design portfolio right then and there?

I don’t know the answer to that.  But at the rate our mobile technology is evolving today I believe it’s possible. I can’t wait to see what our incredibly smart phones have in store for us now.

Future Updates, What’s Next with Social Media

Albeit trite, I can’t help but say my how fast the year went by! As evidenced by the campaigns featured in my last blog and more recently Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO being named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year, 2010 was a great year for social media. With the new year just around the corner I have a few predictions of what’s in store for 2011.

Once you check in… With cell phones becoming more advanced and the debut of gadgets like the IPad and Galaxy tab, the average computer user has been unchained from their desk and is now able to surf the web on the go. As mobile technology becomes more advanced, location-based social networking sites like Foursquare and Gowalla are gaining popularity. Even the social media heavy hitters started noticing. Twitter added the option to send location information with your tweets and Facebook has a places check-in feature now as well. I suspect in 2011 a lot of brands will start offering more location-based incentives to consumers. Next time you’re at your favorite store be prepared to ‘check-in’ in order to receive a discount or gift with purchase.

All for one… It is no secret that online group purchasing is a hit. People all over the country are logging in to sites such as Groupon and Living Social to purchase discounts for local restaurants and services. For those not familiar (and living under a rock) the way these group purchasing websites work is that a business will list a discounted deal (usually up for 24-27 hours) for purchase. A certain amount of people must buy the deal in order for it to be valid. In August, Groupon launched their first national offer with the clothing retailer Gap. The sale was a huge success and it was reported that 10 Gap deals were being sold per second. Nordstrom Rack and American Apparel are two retailers that have recently jumped on board and had success as well. In 2011 I anticipate this to catch on even more and predict not only clothing retailers but big brands like Starbucks and Target will hop on board.

App shopping… Whether you prefer Android or Apple there is no doubt that people love their apps. There is virtually an app for everything you can think of. With mobile networks getting faster and stronger a lot of brands have already began popping up in the apps market. Beauty retailer Sephora has an Apple app that allows you to scan barcodes for product information and availability. Since these apps run on the mobile networks as well as wifi I think a lot of retailers will begin including shopping through apps as an option. Most mobile devices have social media integration so once you finish purchasing an item you should be able to let your social networks know about your great new purchase.

The return of the fallen… Expect to hear the word MySpace a lot in the new year (and possibly reactivate your account!) With a new logo and layout it seems MySpace is trying to creep back onto the social networking space. I don’t know if I am quite predicting a complete comeback per se, but I do expect to see a lot of efforts from the company in 2011 to bring the masses back on the site. Although Facebook is at the top of the game right now, some could argue that they have nowhere to go but downhill. A lot of Facebook users are already complaining about the constant changes the site seems to roll out.

There are a lot of opportunities to look forward in the new year and your business could easily follow suit and join in on the social media revolution. Be sure to stay informed on the trends that are popular throughout the year and see where your organization fits in the mix. Happy New Year!

What’s the deal with the future of social networking?

It is no secret that in the last few years the state of the economy has taken its toll on just about everyone. It seems more than ever people have been looking for ways to save money. Everyone is on the hunt for a good bargain. This is especially apparent in the new wave of social networking.

Take for example Groupon, a social networking site where members living in the same area come together for group purchasing in search of discounts. The way it works is once a day Groupon announces a local deal that members can choose to purchase. If enough members purchase the offer it becomes valid (if not the offer is void and people who have already purchased do not get charged.) People interested in certain offers will reach out to their personal networks and try to get more people to buy in on the deal. Another site Foursquare is also all about your location and great discounts. On Foursquare you “check in” at certain locations in your area such as bars, restaurants, stores, etc and you receive points. Once your points exceed a certain amount you than are granted honors such as becoming “the mayor” of a location. This title comes with perks as mayors often get discounts to their favorite places in the city. Naturally this sparks a sense of competition and pride in members who will continue to support their favorite local businesses in an attempt to hold on to their title (or in some cases attempt to dethrone the current top dog.). Both sites are examples of how all over the internet people are coming together for the sake of a good deal.

You can apply the same motto to your social networking as well. Do you want to increase your twitter following? Run a promotion where if you reach X amount of followers you will issue a discount code. People interested in receiving the deal will surely promote the offer to people in their network helping generate awareness of your organization. The only thing people like more than a discount is a freebie. Host a giveaway on any of your social platforms and just watch how your network increases. Cutting your target audience a deal every now and then is something they will appreciate. In turn they are more likely to stay loyal and even spread the word about you. Happy clients and increased awareness is a deal you should never pass up.
